What wood dust is
Wood dust is the particulate generated when solid wood, board material or wood-based composites are mechanically reduced. It includes both softwood dust (from pine, spruce, fir and similar species) and hardwood dust (from oak, beech, ash, mahogany and other broadleaf species), as well as dust from MDF, plywood, OSB, chipboard and laminated panels which may contain binders such as urea-formaldehyde and isocyanate resins.
Particle sizes span the full inhalable range. Coarse chip and shaving settle quickly and are largely a housekeeping issue, but the fine fraction generated by sanding, routing and high-speed machining is small enough to remain airborne and to deposit in the upper and lower airways.

Why wood dust exposure assessment matters

A well-designed wood dust survey often pairs inhalable sampling for WEL comparison with respirable sampling or real-time optical monitoring to identify the highest-exposure tasks.
How wood dust monitoring is approached
Wood dust monitoring follows the structured approach in HSE guidance and BS EN 689. Personal inhalable samplers are worn by representative members of each similar exposure group through a full shift, with the sampling head positioned in the breathing zone. Filters are conditioned and weighed gravimetrically before and after exposure under HSE MDHS 14/4.
Sampling strategy should reflect actual work patterns rather than ideal conditions. Surveys that only capture short demonstration runs miss the contribution of intermittent high-exposure tasks such as bag emptying, filter changes and cleanup. Repeat measurements across shifts and seasons strengthen the basis for any conclusion about compliance with the WEL.
What wood dust results help employers understand
A useful wood dust monitoring report tells an employer three things: the 8-hour TWA exposure for each similar exposure group, how those exposures compare to the EH40 hardwood and softwood WELs, and which specific tasks or work areas are driving the highest exposures. Results are then interpreted under BS EN 689 to decide whether existing controls are adequate or whether further action is required.
Where exposures approach or exceed the WEL, the priority is engineering improvement rather than reliance on respiratory protection. Common findings include under-performing extraction at sanding stations, unsuitable use of compressed air for cleaning down, and accumulation of settled dust that is repeatedly re-suspended by foot and forklift traffic.
Practical wood dust control considerations
Wood dust control sits squarely within the COSHH hierarchy. Elimination is rarely realistic for an organisation whose product is wood, but substitution — for example moving from MDF to a lower-emission board — and process change can reduce exposure significantly. Engineering controls then carry the bulk of the work.
- Properly designed on-tool extraction for sanders, routers, mitre saws and biscuit jointers.
- Fixed LEV at static machines (panel saws, spindle moulders, thicknessers, sanders).
- Adequate make-up air so that extraction systems are not starved.
- Vacuum cleanup — never dry sweeping or compressed-air blow-down.

When to review or arrange wood dust testing
Wood dust monitoring is not a one-off compliance exercise. A new survey is normally appropriate when machinery, layout or workload changes materially, when LEV is modified or replaced, when a new species or board type is introduced, after any control improvement to verify effectiveness, and at routine intervals where prior results approached the WEL.
